5 Tips for Choosing an Everyday Bag

Your every day bag is something you shouldn’t consider lightly. When looking for a new bag, take the following things into consideration:

  1. What will you be using this bag for? Will you need to carry juice boxes and crayons in addition to a wallet and cellphone, or are you only looking for something big enough for lipstick and a credit card?
  2. Choose something sturdy. It’s one thing to pick up something small and frivolous for the occasional party or night on the town. An everyday bag needs to be sturdy enough to carry reading material for the playground or commute, snacks keys, and various and sundry other items.
  3. Choose a practical style with an easy to clean material. White linen isn’t a good choice for an everyday bag. Any material that can hard dirt and stains or can be wiped clean with a sponge is good everyday bag fodder.
  4. Choose neutral. An everyday bag should go with everything you wear. Best choices are black, brown, navy or gray. White is a bad choice for the aforementioned dirty reasons.
  5. Choose a bag that’s comfortable. The cutest bags can dig into shoulders or bang against hips. Walk around the sales floor wearing the back to make sure the straps aren’t going to constantly slip off your shoulder or there aren’t any uncomfortable buckles.

Maybe this is included under “brown”, but I highly recommend bags in camel or beige, or a similar shade (I recently blogged about one in leather on The Bargain Queens if you’re curious). They don’t show dirt quite like white does and actually stand out less than a bright white back. They’re also less harsh-looking than black as a day bag. Browns can work, too, but I find that they can easily clash with other browns. Plus, black can still overwhelm an outfit like black.

A colored bag can also work well. I have a lot of bags and switch between them frequently depending on the outfit, but I’ve been using a new coral pink bag for the last few weeks almost non-stop because I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well it goes with everything I wear. In fact, it has really the made the outfit in numerous occasions where I almost went for another bag but caught myself in the mirror holding the coral bag and decided to stick with it.
