7 Tips for Choosing a Prom Dress

Many high schools are holding their proms throughout May which means teens everywhere will be looking for that perfect dress. Sometimes the dress you had in mind is the one least appropriate for your age or body type. Here are a few tips for choosing a prom dress.

1. It’s fun to dress a little more grown up, but don’t overdo it on the sexiness. Slutty prom queens tend to regret their choices later. Don’t hide your prom pictures from your kids, dress in a manner befitting a teen.

2. Choose a light fabric that breathes well. You’ll be dancing all night in a room filled with people and things tend to get too hot. Short sleeves, halters, spaghetti straps and strapless will make you feel more comfortable. If you’re truly worried about being hot and sweaty, there’s plenty of tea and cocktail length formal wear available.

3. It’s best to choose formalwear in person rather than order online. Some of the styles come in strange sizes and don’t fit properly. The last thing you want is to have to return the dress at the last minute and pick whatever’s available. Take your time and shop at a place where you can try on several styles.

4. If you’re on a budget consider going vintage. Many consignment and thrift shops have some lovely styles for less, they just need to be freshened up a bit.

5. Don’t buy a dress that’s too tight. You want to be able to move around freely and sit with ease.

6. Talk to the sales staff and ask them to help you find a style appropriate for your body type. You want to accentuate your best features and minimize your problem areas.

7. Bring along your mother, sister or good friends to help you find an appropriate style. Often we choose styles that don’t work for us. Someone with an honest opinion can help us find the perfect look.
