You know the drill…heck we all know the drill. You need to keep your skin protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Judging form a lot of the people I see at the park or supermarket, the message isn’t exactly getting across to everyone.

So let’s go over it again. Everyone looks better with a tan, there’s no denying that. But unless you to end up with an ugly case of melanoma, it’s best to protect yourself when you go out in the sun. Hey, there’s always a spray tan, right?

Here’s how to do it:

  1. When working in the garden or just hanging out outside, where a lightweight protective clothing. If it’s not too hot, try linen or cotton - long sleeves and capris or long pants are best, but The List Maven understand 80 and 90 degree weather is made for showing skin.
  2. Wear a hat. I know, I know. I didn’t want to do it either. Hats don’t look good on me and they mess up the hair. Fortunately there’s a style out there for everyone. I prefer an Outback style adjustable hat. I can wear it up or down and can go from barbecue to garden to beach and not look too dorky.
  3. Take advantage of umbrellas - If you have a beach or backyard umbrella, do use it. We have a pergola over part of our back deck and my husband strings a tarp over it in the summer. We can dine without the heat and I can work outside in shade.
  4. Sunblock  - It’s not enough to wear makeup and moisturizers with sunblock  - though they help. Where sunblock all over when venturing out doors. Put it on under your makeup and apply liberally to arms, legs and all exposed body parts.
  5. Wear a lip balm or or SPF sunblock for the lips. I learned an important lesson one year in the Bahamas, and that’s not to leave your lips exposed to the sun.I returned home with huge unsightly blisters all over my lips and called out of work for a week.
  6. Wear sunblocking sun glasses. Wrap around shades are the best for protecting your eyes and the skin around your eyes.
  7. When out in the sun, always carry an extra coverup. You may think you’re well covered but accidents happen. I always carry an extra long sleeved t-shirt to the beach to wear in case I start to burn.
