8 Tips for Caring for Silk
Have you ever been afraid to buy a silk scarf or blouse because you feel it would be too much to care for? I’m here to tell you that caring for silk isn’t too difficult. You can’t throw it in the wash like other fabrics, however. If you don’t mind a little hand cleaning, there’s not much to it. Here are a few tips for caring for silk:
- It’s better to hand wash silk than to dry clean. Dry cleaning silk can cause the garment to lose it’s shape and style.
- Regular detergents are harmful to silk. Special cleaners, Woolite or a mild (diluted) dish washing liquid are your best bets.
- Don’t soak silk as this can cause it to run or fade.
- If your silk garment is beginning to yellow, rinse with vinegar diluted with water.
- Always use cold water when washing silk.
- Never use bleach on silk. If you need to whiten, try peroxide diluted with water.
- Always “test wash” a hidden part of the garment before giving it a full fledged wash.
- Dry your garment flat on a towel.
