5 Things I Wouldn’t Mind Receiving this Mother’s Day

Moms

This might be slightly off topic, but not much. This year, Mother’s Day will be rather predictable. This isn’t a complaint. I love receiving things for my garden, and many times there are times I ask for them. The things I really want for mother’s day I’ve asked for or hinted for but don’t really get. That’s because in my husband’s eye they’re either frivolous (he’s not much into the impractical) or just not his idea of a gift. If I had my druthers, here’s how Mother’s Day would go.

  1. Sleep late without anyone waking me every five minutes to ask me where something is or how late I plan on sleeping.
  2. Have a nice breakfast without anyone leaving the dishes for me. (”But I cooked and let you sleep late…”)
  3. Not having to go to my Mother in Law’s house. (I’m actually putting my foot down on that one this year )
  4. A mani/pedi - This falls under the impractical category.
  5. A gift certificate for something I don’t need.

I love my family, so please don’t get me wrong. For the past 9 years we’ve spent all our efforts saving either to buy a house, have a family or renovate. It wouldn’t kill anyone to splurge on something unnecessary for a day.

I am somewhat treating myself though. I decided this year wouldn’t be about my Mother in Law and told my family I’m staying home to have a Mom’s Day by myself. And yes a pedicure and chick flick will be involved.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms! I hope your doing what you want…and maybe even something impractical.

3 Reasons to Use Clean & Clear’s New In Shower Facial

Clean & Clear Steam in Shower Facial

For the past couple of week’s I’ve been using Clean & Clear’s new In Shower Facial. It comes from their “Soft” line and I can’t say anything bad about it. Because it’s Clean & Clear you know it’s a name you could trust. Plus it’s affordable and it works. Not convinced? Let me give you three great reasons to use Clean & Clear’s new In Shower Facial:

  1. It only takes a minute - Put a dollop into your hand and massage into your face and neck to exfoliate and penetrate. Leave it on for just a minute before washing it off.
  2. You can feel it working - The Facials contains peppermint and it soothes and softens the skin. You can feel it work - in fact, I like the way it feels so much I’ll leave it on longer than a minute.
  3. Your skin looks and feels great - And really, isn’t that what it’s all about. The Clean & Clear In Shower Facial makes your skin feel soft  and gives it a healthy glow. You can get the same look and feel at a salon, but now you don’t have to.

2 Natural Hair Conditioners Found Right in Your Fridge!

Flip

Out of conditioner? Don’t worry - you can still have soft shiny hair! There are a couple of products in your fridge that will give you shine, manageability and softness. Best part? They’re all natural.

1. Mayonnaise - When I was a teen I read an article about a starlet who slathered on the mayo to keep her hair soft and shiny, so I did it too. I ended up with a greasy head. So I shampooed again and rinsed the greasy stuff out. I ended up with soft, beautiful hair. Bottom line? If using mayonnaise, condition first, then wash or you’ll end up with greasy locks.

2. Egg - Eggs are so good for your hair. Scramble one up and spread it around. Leave it for a few minutes and rinse out. You’ll end up with a soft, shiny head of hair.

8 Uses for Hairspray

Hairspray

Think hairspray is only for hair? Think again! Check out a few more uses for hair spray.

  1. Remove ink from fabric - Have a mishap with a pen? Spray on a little hairspray and let sit for a bit before tossing into the wash.
  2. Stop stocking runs - If you’re pantyhose are starting to run, spray on a little hairspray. This will stop the run at least until you can replace it with another pair.
  3. Protect art and writing projects - Protect ink from running or fading by spraying it with hairspray. This will also ensure the longevity of children’s art projects.
  4. Spray on a piece of thread for easier threading. The still thread will go into the eye of a needle better.
  5. Spray magazine or newspaper pages with hairspray to make them shiny and stiff - they can double as wrapping paper.
  6. Use hairspray to straighten and stiffen ruffled draperies and other fabric.
  7. Use hairspray to polish shoes or keep their shine longer.
  8. Use to keep dried flowers and leaves from fading.

3 Skin Cancer Protection Tips

Hat and Towel on Lounge Chair, Aruba, Caribbean

We’ve talked about protecting the skin from cancer before here at The List Maven, but it’s skin cancer awareness month and the Beauty & Style channel’s theme so I don’t think it’ll hurt to go over it again. Really, there’s no such thing as too much education.

It’s actually quite simple. To protect your skin from the sun, you have to limit exposure. Here’s how:

  1. Avoid the sun during its hottest times: The sun is at its brightest between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Do your best to either stay out of your son or protect your skin during this time.
  2. Protect yourself with sunblock: If you will be out in the son, wear plenty of sunblock on any exposed area. It doesn’t matter if you’ll be out for a few hours or a few minutes, you still need maximum protection. A block with an SPF of 15 or higher is best.
  3. Always wear a hat and UV-protected sunglasses when spending the day out of doors. A beach umbrella is another good investment.

Lipstick Etiquette

Melting Lipstick

Here’s a new one on me. There’s such a thing as lipstick etiquette. No really. Apparently there are dos and don’ts to lipstick application I wasn’t aware of. Allow me to enlighten:

  1. It’s bad manners to apply lipstick in public. Rather than put on your gloss at the restaurant table or at your desk in the office, it’s best to excuse yourself and touch up in the ladies room.
  2. One should never apply so much lipstick it comes off on the stemware. Which is kind of hard to tell when you’re applying - I mean even a little bit can come off. I see where they’re going with this though, it’s kind of nasty to see someone’s big red lipstick stains on glasses. Always blot before you drink ladies.
  3. Don’t leave your lipstick blotted napkins and tissues on the restaurant or dinner party table for all to see. Discreetly fold it up and put it in your pocket or purse if you’re not near a trash receptacle.

6 Essential Items to Pack in Your Prom Purse

Satin Purse

Formal purses are a lot smaller than your every day bag. Do choose a bag that’s cute, but also choose a purse that can hold all the essentials including:

  1. Cellphone
  2. Identification card or driver’s license
  3. Emergency cab fare
  4. Lipstick or gloss
  5. Comb or small hairbrush
  6. Camera (Unless your cellphone has a camera.)

These are the essentials. If you can fit breath mints, hair spray and a small sewing kit, that would be ideal.

What’s in Our Purses?

Admit it. We’ve all seen women with oversized purses and wondered what’s inside. You know you want to take a peek…

Today we’re giving you that chance. I asked the ladies (and man) of the Beauty and Style channel to dump their bags and give us look. Damn we carry a lot of stuff.

First up, our illustrious leader, Christina Jones:

CJ's purse

Hmmm…what do we have here? Nice Zappos notebook, CJ. I could use one of them. I also see she brings her own Tobasco sauce, is a fan of MAC cosmetics, and has a bag filled with change just like me. Glad to see I’m not the only one who jingles when she walks.

Next victim… our Snarkstress, Liberty Kontranowski:

Lib's purse

I see Lib likes Trident and some CoverGirl. Plus we have a little Clean & Clear and some Johnson & Johnson’s lotion, and various and sundry makeup. Either Lib’s very neat or she did a little cleaning up before taking this picture.

The Fabulous Teri Cosenzi also has a tidy purse:

teris_bag

Teri certainly does dig pink. Pink calculator, pink purse…nice Chanel sunglasses, by the way…pink makeup bag, pink wallet, pink lipstick….

Our resident Hot Mama, Dexie not only dumped her bag, but she blogged about it too…

dexie.jpg

Dexie makes me feel better about my own bag. Lots of good stuff in there, Dex. For a complete breakdown, visit Style it Less where she list the contents of her purse in detail.

Shannon Nelson took a minute of her time to dump her purse too…

Shannon's purse

Love those Oral mints, my favorite is the Mojito, in case you were wondering. Shannon also carries a calculator and let’s see what else I spy with my little eye…freeze 24/7, good stuff there, Urban Apothecary and Prescriptives products, Lancome, Clinique, Sephora…we do have good taste in our products.

Chloe Findlay-Harder wins our award for neatest purse, that’s for sure…

Chloe's Purse

Cell phone, iPod, a little lip balm…I’m digging Chloe’s minimalistic style.

Bridget Wright at Banging Bags also has a nice, tidy bag. I think these ladies cleaned up before they sent their pictures over.

Bridget's bag

Where are all the receipts and crayon pieces and bits of candy collecting hair and getting gummy at the bottom of the bag? I can tell Bridget is very organized.Several different wallets, a note book, a very clean hairbrush…I bet she can find everything at the bottom of her bag.

P.Kim Bui at Indie Style File dumped her bag for us too…

Kim's bag

Let’s see what Kim’s purse tells us. She’s neat, that’s for sure. And she has a habit. And likes a little gloss from time to time. Oh Kim…surely you can fit more into that big bag. You don’t keep the rest of the customers waiting in line while you try to find your wallet or cash, do you? I’m really disappointed at all the tidy bags here. And I’m embrassed for my own bag, which we’ll get to a little later.

Here’s Tris Hussey’s man purse bag:

tris_bag_1.JPG

As you can see it’s a nice manly mix of wires, discs, a be-stickered laptop…but no product in the bunch. Just wait until makeup bag day, Tris.

What’s in my purse? You may be sorry you asked…

Debs purse

I bought this purse 14 years ago on sale at J,C.Penny and it’s still in terrific condition. It took a break during the diaper bag years, but it’s been back in action for the past three years of so. As you can see I have some Play Doh and markers to keep us amused at Applebees, my Lauren Huttons cosmetics, which I love, lip balm, a Flip camera, my iPod, lots of lipsticks and glosses and about a dozen pens which would explain why I can’t find anything around the house.

All images courtesy their respective b5 B&S bloggers and are being used with permission. I promise.
