4 Things You Can Do to Protect Your Skin Before Going Out in the Snow

by Deborah on February 22nd, 2008

We have our first “real” snowstorm of the season today. This is something we’ve been looking forward to all year! A day of playing outside followed by popcorn and hot chocolate and maybe even a good movie or book. But I’m getting a little ahead of myself.

If you’re venturing out into the snow, you want to take the appropriate steps to protect your skin from the cold. The last thing you want is dry, itchy skin or painful cracked lips.

  1. Drink plenty of water. While this is sure to encourage more trips inside to the bathroom, water will keep you hydrated which helps prevent your skin from drying out.
  2. Moisturize. Use a good moisturizer for your hands and face. Your best bet is a moisturizer with an SPF 15 to protect from sun damage as well.
  3. Use a good lip balm to keep lips hydrated and soft. I actually keep a lip balm in the pockets of all of my jackets and coats and one in my purse so I’m never without. I even have one in the pocket of my robe!
  4. Make sure your skin is well protected. Wear good thick gloves, preferably the kind coated to keep out water and thick socks to keep your feet warm and dry.

When you come in from the snow remove all the wet stuff immediately. Moisturize hands, lips, feet and the face once again as the change in temperature can also be drying.

Have fun when you play in the snow, but please take the necessary steps to protect your skin!
