The List Maven’s Top 10 Fashion Faux Pas

by Deborah on April 2nd, 2008

You’ve done it, I’ve done it, we’ve all done it. Whether we care to admit it or not, we’ve all committed a fashion faux pas every now and then. Not sure you committed one? Check out The List Maven’s Top 10 Fashion Faux Pas:

1. Visible Panty Lines - In this day and age there are ways to get around it. If you wear the right type of underwear and your clothes aren’t so tight, there’s no reason people should be seeing what you’re wearing underneath.

2. Pants that Expose Every Bit of Your Privates: That’s right, I’m talking about the Camel Toe. Unless you dance around a pole for a living or you’re married to Ice-T, there’s no reason people need to see every nook and cranny. If your pants lift and separate, they’re way too tight.

3. Visible Bras - Your bra should match your shirt. So if you’re wearing a white blouse and your black bra is showing through, we need to have a talk about matching.

4. Wearing a Belly Shirt When You Have No Business Wearing a Belly Shirt - I’ll be blunt. Belly shirts only work on a certain body type. If your have a muffin top spilling out from under your shirt, it’s not the right look for you. By the same token, if you’re over 25, you’re probably too old for a belly shirt.

5. Exposed Bra Straps - Tighten up those straps, ladies. There’s no reason they should be falling down your arm or peeking out of your cleavage. They call it underwear for a reason.

6. Black Socks with Shorts - No one can pull off this look. Especially if you’re wearing white sneakers or shoes. Don’t try this at home.

7. Fanny Packs - Sure they’re convenient, but can you choose a more unattractive accessory? Go with a cute backpack purse instead. You’re welcome.

8. Too Much Bling - We get it. You won the Lottery. Don’t you know real rich people prefer the subtle and understated? Normal people don’t walk around looking like Mr. T and Flava Flav.

9. The Mullet - No. Just…no.

10. Leggings - The 80’s are over and we’re not getting physical anymore. Unless you’re 8 and wearing them under a flouncy skirt, lose the leggings.

this is silly. why cant people just dress how they feel like dressing without you making them feel bad as if some objective standard exists.

I think people should be allowed to wear “too much bling” once in a while. But, not every day, lol!

I actually agree on all of those! Am I just get old?

I spent time in Paris last fall and leggings were a huge fashion statement. Not the lycra (think Flashdance) type of leggings, but out of very upscale, luxe material like cashmere and soft wools.

They looked terrific! (Never thought I’d say that either.)

Interesting, Mary Jo. I’ll have to see what I can find on those types of leggings - I was thinking more of the Lindsay Lohan variety.
